GreenHack: Design a Participatory Geographic Application for ITU Green Campus!
This event being conducted under MGA-2022-43681 İSTANBUL TEKNİK ÜNİVERSİTESİ CBS TABANLI KULLANICI ODAKLI YEŞİL KAMPÜS UYGULAMA ALTERNATİFLERİNİN BELİRLENMESİ Project.
As Istanbul Technical University, we are continuing our efforts to be among the greenest universities globally. In this context, we invite your contributions to rise in the UI Green Metric rankings and implement the ITU Green Campus project. GreenHack is a hackathon event scheduled for December 1-3, 2023. In this event, we want participants to develop an integrated participatory GIS (PGIS/PPGIS) application prototype and concept for the "ITU Green Campus" project at ITU Ayazaga campus, integrated into the ITU Mobile application.
PGIS/PPGIS stands for Participatory Geographic Information Systems. These systems allow users to collect, share, analyze, and interpret geographic data, enabling them to express their knowledge, opinions, and suggestions about their environments on maps. UI Green Metric is a ranking system that measures and compares the environmental performance of universities. This system evaluates universities based on six main criteria: Campus and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education, and Research. ITU Green Campus is a project initiated by ITU to realize its environmental sustainability vision. This project includes goals such as increasing green areas on the campus, ensuring energy efficiency, improving waste management, saving water, optimizing transportation, and supporting education and research activities. ITU Mobile is the official mobile application of ITU, designed to meet the academic, administrative, social, and cultural needs of ITU members, including sub-applications.
In GreenHack, teams are expected to develop a prototype and concept for a PGIS application. This is a model demonstrating how the application will function and appear. The prototype will explain the purpose of the application, who it is for, what data and methods it will use, and the outcomes it aims to achieve.
When developing the prototype and concept, consider the following tips:
- Present your prototype with pseudocode and graphic narrative techniques. Pseudocode is a method that defines the steps of an algorithm in a human-readable way, mixed with the rules of programming languages. For example, you can use techniques such as screen designs, diagrams, symbols, colors, and animations.
- Write your concept considering UI Green Metric criteria, ITU Green Campus objectives, and PGIS/PPGIS concepts. In your concept, specify elements such as the application's target audience, user needs, data sources, analysis methods, mapping features, feedback mechanisms, participation processes, and evaluation criteria.
- Design your prototype and concept to be integratable into ITU Mobile. Consider that your application could be one of ITU Mobile's sub-applications or a new sub-application. Ensure that your application is compatible with the interface, functions, data, and users of ITU Mobile.
